Details First World War Memorial. Designed by Messrs Maile and Son of London and unveiled in 1921. Dates of the Second World War subsequently added. MATERIALS: granite with lead lettering. DESCRIPTION: the memorial is located on Staplefield Common, at the junction of Cuckfield Road and Brantridge Lane, within a modern post and chain fence. It consists of a wheel-headed cross on a rough-hewn base standing on a single square step with a paved surround. The cross has an inverted sword carved in relief on the front face. A smoothed recessed panel on the front face of the base is inscribed TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN HONOUR OF THOSE MEN OF/ STAPLEFIELD/ WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WARS/ 1914 - 1918 AND 1939 - 1945/ THEIR NAMES ARE INSCRIBED ON THE TABLET IN THE CHURCH.
