The civil parish and the rural district were abolished in 1936 on the creation of Thurrock Urban District. At the 1931 census (the last before its abolition), the civil parish of Stanford-le-Hope had a population of 4,311. Early modernist author Joseph Conrad lived in Stanford-le-Hope from 1896 to 1898.
