Details OLD CHURCH ROAD 1. 5104 Harborne B17 Parish Church of St Peter SP 08 SW 11/32 25.4.52 II 2. Battlemented C15 west tower of 3 stages with C14 details in the lowest stage. Nave, aisles, transepts and apsidal chapel all of 1867 and by Yeoville Thomason. Red sandstone. East window in memory of David Cox (1783-1859), the watercolourist, who lies buried in the churchyard. Background

History

There has been a church on the site since Saxon times and St Chad is even thought to have preached there. The base of an early preaching cross was found in the mid-1980s during work at the back of the church. The parish formerly covered what is now Smethwick (North Harborne), all of current Harborne and even parts of Quinton (Ridgeacre). The present building is Victorian, dating from the 1860s by architect Yeoville Thomason. Elihu Burritt, who was living in Harborne at the time was on the committee that oversaw the restoration.
