Details TQ 05NW 6/25 BOROUGH OF WOKING CHURCH HILL PYRFORD Church of St. Nicholas 22/7/53 I Church. C12, restored in 1869 by Sir T.G. Jackson. Mortar covered puddingstone, iron stone and clunch dressings; plain tiled roof with wood shingled bell turret under broach spine restored in 1967 to west end. Nave, north and south porches, with chancel to the east. Central medieval buttress to west end. North porch, timber framed with brick infill. North door Norman; zig zag carving to arch, simple capitals, one scalloped one with plain leaves to jamb shafts. Round arch Norman windows to north side of chancel and either side of the buttress on the west wall; C14 east window, remainder Victorian restorations. Interior: Arched braced roof, 3 trusses to the nave. 2 to the chancel, round one step chancel arch. Fittings: Fine geometrically panelled Jacobean pulpit with tester, inlaid dated on the front - 1628. Remnants of wall paintings: south wall c1140. Flagellation of Christ and a Psychomachia; north wall of nave: Pilgrim's Way c1200, restored 1970. PEVSNER: Buildings of England: Surrey (1982 ed.) p.419.
