Mixed late Scots round-arched gothic and Romanesque motifs. Broad 5-bay rectangle orientated N-S with halls beneath on sloping site, front (N) transverse saddleback tower of oblong plan full width of church flanked at gables by apsidal stair turrets, projecting centre porch with bold triple lancets over; 2-storey wing at SE containing study and service rooms with forestair, apsidal bay and pencil-type chimney. Finely built of rubble with Lorimer-inspired detail of very high quality: sculpture of galleon at porch and Lion of St Mark and Eagle of St John at tower, flushwork eaves galleries at stair turrets and crosses at gables of saddleback, elaborate ironwork grille by Thomas Hadden at porch. Spacious terraced gardens sloping down to Water of Leith both sides. Interior: good vestibule in tower with glazed oak screen to church, segmental arches to semi-domed cantilever stairs in apsidal features at ends; body of church aisleless simple barrel-ceiled with gallery at N end and twin lecterns flanking rich screen-work organ front by Sir Frank Mears 1925.
