Details War Memorial, circa 1920. MATERIALS: constructed of granite. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is an ornately-carved Celtic cross which stands on a tapered stone plinth, with a two-stepped base. The north side of the lower step has been extended forward to include a slanting stone base. The inscriptions are in black metal lettering, and to the north face of the plinth reads: TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND / IN SACRED MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THE / ANCIENT PARISH OF ST AUSTELL / WHO MADE THE SUPREME SACRIFICE IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 Below the inscription and to the other sides of the plinth are the names of the 200 men who fell. The inscription on the north face of the upper step reads: AND IN MEMORY OF THOSE OF THIS AREA / WHO LOST THEIR LIVES IN THE WAR OF / 1939-1945 The names of the 144 men who fell are inscribed to the sloping face of the extended lower base.
