Details TM 37 NE SPEXHALL WASH LANE 5/32 Spexhall Manor 1-9-55 - II Former farmhouse, on a partly moated site. C16, with extensive additions and restoration in 1908 by Sarel. 2 storeys and attics; basic 3-cell lobby- entrance plan. Timber-framed, prior to 1908 faced in brick, but now with exposed studding and brick nogging on the upper floor. The studding appears genuine, but pairs of short arched braces have been introduced and are spaced evenly across the facade. Plaintiled roofs. One internal C16 chimney-stack has 4 barrel shafts with moulded bases; various later chimney-stacks, 2 set externally, have shafts in similar style. 3 gabled dormers have mock- timbering and 3-light casement windows with diamond-leaded panes; all the remaining windows have square-leaded panes: 2-light casements to the upper floor, 4-light to the ground floor. A 2-storey porch of 1908 is jettied on 3 sides; mock timbering to the upper storey; heavily panelled door. The south end of the front, and the whole of the garden front are of 1908: red brick, some mock timbering, plaintiled roofs, in a lavish pseudo-Tudor style. 2 projecting gables, one jettied, both with mullion-and-transome windows to the ground floor. The side entrance door is within a tall narrow timbered wing. The interior of the original house has exposed timbering: one ceiling with moulded cross beams. The interior of the extensions is mainly in Edwardian Queen Anne style. Listing NGR: TM3803979346 Legacy The contents of this record have been generated from a legacy data system.
