The inscription on the front face of the plinth reads AMDG* / IN LOVING AND / HONOURED MEMORY / OF THE / MEN OF SHADWELL / WHO / GAVE THEIR LIVES / FOR / KING AND COUNTRY / IN THE WAR / 1914 - 1918 / RIP. The whole stands on a three-stepped stone base. * This is a traditional Jesuit motto standing for 'Ad Maiorum Dei Gloriam', Latin for 'to the greater glory of God'.
