Details SJ 32 SE 8/149 RUYTON-XI-TOWNS CP, OLDEN LANE (north side) Ruyton Manor GV II Country house. 1860 with minor later additions and alterations. Rock-faced red sandstone ashlar; low-pitched hipped slate roofs concealed by parapet. Neo-Norman castle style. Two and three storeys, with moulded eaves cornice, embattled parapets and false machincolations; roll-moulded battered plinth. 1:3:3:3:1 bays,higher centre section projecting to form rectangular tower, three bays to left and right also projecting from single outer bays. Recessed round-headed windows throughout, those to ground floor of three bay sections to left and right of centre in three-bay arcades with zig-zag decoration to arches supported on circular shafts with carved capitals. Ground-floor windows of outer bays have twin round-headed lights with diamond-shaped carving to tympana. Windows to first and second floors of centre section have plain hoodmoulds and imposts. Prominent central porch has clasping buttresses resembling corner turrets to front and round-headed windows to sides. Round-headed arch approached by flight of stone steps has one order of shafts with scalloped capitals. Recessed panelled double doors have semi-circular fanlight with fishscale patterning. Tourelle to left corner. Right return has almost detached octagonal tower to centre with chamfered base and round-headed doorway to east; cross-shaped gun-loops to south and east faces. Rear elevation has triple round-arched window, centre light divided into two, with semi-circular relieving arch above. Interior. Inspection not possible at time of resurvey (November 1986) but likely to be of interest. Formerly known as Ruyton Towers, the house originally extended further to rear. B.o.E. p. 238.
