Details GREAT RISSINGTON GREAT RISSINGTON VILLAGE SP 1917-2017 9/154 Row of 6 monuments and a single monument in the churchyard of the Church of St John the Baptist cllm south of the churchyard GV II Row of six headstones next to churchyard path. Late C18-early C19. Limestone. From left to right: a) Headstone to William Smith, died 1829. Tall segmental-headed headstone with urn containing fruit and flowers and foliate scrollwork at the top. b) Headstone. Early C18. Sunken inscription panel with scalloped moulding to the margin. Winged angel's flanked by two rosettes and two hour-glasses at the top. No legible inscription. c) Headstone to William Smith, died 1822. Similar in style to previously recorded headstone also to William Smith (q.v.). d) Headstone with partially legible inscription possibly including the date 1747. Sunken inscription plaque with scalloped margin. Winged angel's head flanked by single plant motifs in bold relief above the inscription. e) Headstone to William Smith, died 1800 and Mary, his wife died 179-. Similar in style to previous monuments to others of that name but the urn above the inscription is draped with swags. f) Double headstone. Mid C18. No legible inscription. Double segmental-head each with winged angel's head in bold relief at the top. Foliate scrollwork and drapery down the sides of the headstone. g) Single headstone at centre of group of three headstones c3m to the north of the latter. Partially legible inscription including the dates 1760 and 1731. Segmental head. Square inscription plaque with a wide moulded margin. Small winged angel's head with down-folded wings at the top.
