Details THORPE AUDLIN SE41NE 7/51 Rogerthorpe Manor GV II Manor house, now hotel and restaurant. C17 core, but mostly C19. Coursed squared sandstone with quoins, stone slate roots. Approximately rectangular plan formed by additions to the ends and west side of a 2-bay range on a north-south axis, with a small courtyard on its west side now closed by C20 addition incorporating main entrance. Two storeys, in Jacobean style; symmetrical south front has plinth and dripbands (carried round); central 2- storey porch has round-headed outer doorway in architrave decorated in "Jacobean" style, round-headed inner doorway with early C19 fanight, sashed windows at 1st floor; an each side of porch, a 2-storey canted bay with mullion-and-transom windows on both floors, and embattled parapet. Ripped roof with ridge chimney. Two-bay left return wall in matching style has 2 windows on each floor, mostly transomed. Right return wall has similar windows but is mostly covered by C20 flat-roofed ballroom (which is not of special interest). Rear gable of this wing has an apex chimney of brick, replacing former external chimney (see below), which was taken down for addition of service wing built at right angles and projecting to east. From reduced inner courtyard a small C17 chamfered window is visible at lst floor of rear end (perhaps formerly a fire window); and a blocked cross window (lacking mullion and transom) in rear wall of front block. Interior: much altered, but internal partition walls approx. 2/3 metre thick suggest that east range was earliest build; and remains of large stone-arched fireplace in north gable wall (now concealed) indicate position of former external chimney stack; 2 lateral beams of large scantling (with unstopped chamfer) in this party ground-floor room to left (
