Details SS20NE PANCRASWEEK CP 9/48 Road Bridge at NGR SS 2880 0838 II Road bridge over remains of Bude canal. 1819-23, restored C20. By James Green, engineer to the Bude Harbour and Canal Company. Concrete roadway carried on 4 closely spaced cast iron arches with cast iron centring and wallplate, wooden post and rail parapet, coursed local stone abutments. The Bude canal was built to transport sea sand, rich in calcium carbonate to fertilise the poor upland clay soils of the surrounding area. The canal was fed from a reservoir, now called the Tamar Lake, to the north, and this road bridge crosses the feeder canal. Illustrated as Moreton Bridge in Harris and Ellis. This is one of the few surviving features of this remarkable piece of engineering, notable for its use of inclined planes. The canal closed in 1902.
