Category A Date Added 11/07/1961 Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Planning Authority Dumfries And Galloway Burgh Dumfries NGR NX 97235 76149 Coordinates 297235, 576149 — Robert Adam, 1780. Memorial column to 3rd Duke of Queensberry (d.1778). Contracted for by Thomas Boyd and originally sited in Queensberry Square; re-erected 1934, under supervision of Alexander Crombie, in forecourt of County Buildings. Tall circular column with stiff-leafed capital and gilded flambeau urn finial; raised on square pedestal on stepped base and with stucco relief on W face, inscription panel to S, ram's head at angles. — Inscribed "This column, sacred to the memory of Charles, Duke of Queensberry and Dover, was erected by the county of Dumfries, as a monument of their veneration for the character of that illustrious nobleman, whose exalted virtues rendered him the ornament of society, and whose numerous acts of public benefice and private charity endeared him to his country. Ob. 22nd Oct. 1778; Aet. 80".
