Details TQ1289NW 1157/12/10036 20-APR-01 HIGH STREET Pinner War Memorial GV II War memorial. 1921 by (Sir) Bertram Mackennal. Buff Derbyshire sandstone on a granite base with bronze inscription tablets. Each face of the square shaft consists of a raised cross, above which is a wreath with fillets. The shaft, with a shallow pyramidal top, stands on a five-stage stepped base; the second highest is loped and the lowest is of granite. Principal inscription reads 'IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM PINNER WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR. 1914-1919. IT IS BETTER FOR US TO DIE IN BATTLE THAN TO BEHOLD THE CALAMITY OF OUR PEOPLE'. HISTORY: This memorial was unveiled on 16th January 1921 by Maj-Gen Lord Cheylesmore, chairman of the Middlesex Territorial Association. See Harrow Observer, 21st January 1921. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 16 February 2017.
