Category B Date Added 03/08/1971 Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Planning Authority Dumfries And Galloway Parish Gretna NGR NY 31929 68009 Coordinates 331929, 568009 — Datestone inscribed 1797 and 1909, but S wall may be earlier. Parish church deepened on plan in 19th century with rebuilt S wall, and jamb added, forming T-plan; much altered by James Barbour, 1909 with simplified Gothic detailings; alterations to jamb; S side added with main roof swept over; also fenestration, N bell-tower central above original projeting breast with door at front; W porch added. Straight skews with moulded skewputts; main roofs slated, ridges, bell tower and caphouse roofs all red-tiled. Interior: (all by Barbour); open-timbered roof; aisle arcades on octagonal columns; organ at SE with vestry behind; pulpit adjoining octagonal pier to S. Churchyard: enclosed by rubble-built walls linked to either end of church W gable; 18th-20th century headstones, many with classical details. — Ecclesiastical building in use as such. 1825 lithograph in vestry and illustration in Didbin's NORTHERN TOUR, pub 1838, Vol II, p. 443 show former appearance of church. Building sequence compares with Kirkpatrick Fleming parish church nearby. Pockocke in his tour journal notes (1760) "Gretna Green where there is a very ancient small Saxon Church" (pub SCOTTISH HISTORY SOCIETY, Vol I, 1887, p. 36).
