Details MATERIALS: Portland stone. DESCRIPTION: the memorial comprises a Celtic-style wheel-head cross set on a tapering shaft surmounting an octagonal plinth. This is set upon a two-stepped base. The inscriptions are carved into recessed panels on the plinth. The west face reads: REMEMBER ALWAYS / THE MEN OF OCKHAM / WHOSE NAMES / ARE WRITTEN HERE / FOR THEY LAID DOWN / THEIR LIVES / FOR THEIR COUNTRY / IN THE GREAT WAR / 1914-1918 / FAITHFUL UNTO DEATH / (NAMES). The east face reads: PLACED HERE / BY THE INHABITANTS / IN PROUD AND LOVING MEMORY / OF THE DEPARTED / AND IN THANKFULNESS FOR / THE RETURN OF MANY OTHERS / WHO WENT FROM THIS VILLAGE / 1939-45 / (NAMES).
