Details TL 3712 12/10 GREAT AMWELL, Great Amwell village, ST JOHNS LANE (north side), Monument to the memory of Sir Hugh Mydelton on larger island below church 4.12.51 GV II Monumental pedestal and swagged urn in Coade stone, dated by inscription 1800 by Robert Mylne. Inscriptions in English or Latin on 4 faces. On S: 'Sacred to the memory of Sir Hugh Mydelton, Baronet, whose successful care, assisted by the patronage of his King, conveyed this stream to London. An immortal work: since men cannot more nearly imitate the Deity, than in bestowing Health.' On N face the same dedication in Latin. On W: 'From the spring of Chadwell, two miles west; and from this source of Amwell, the aquaduct meanders for the space of XL miles: conveying health, pleasure, and convenience, to the metropolis of Great Britain. On E: 'This humble tribute to the genius, talents, and elevation of mind, which conceived and executed this important aquaduct, is dedicated by Robert Mylne, Architect Engineer, etc. A C MDCCC.' A memorial to Sir Hugh Mydelton who constructed The New River 1609-13, by Robert Mylne (1733 - 1811) who was Surveyor to the company 1771 - 1811.
