Details SO 72 SE RUDFORD BARBER'S BRIDGE 8/216 Monument to dead in Civil War skirmish II Monument; 1871 for W. P. Price. Rock-faced ashlar, dressed margins to horizontal joints and corners in upper part. Square needle on base. Three rock-faced steps, smooth ashlar plinth with inscription on all 4 faces, chamfered top. Tapering needle 10 courses high, steeply chamfered top, carrying stone cross. Inscription in English and Welsh. Stones taken from old walls of City of Gloucester. Commemorates Lord Herbert's Welsh force, killed in battle with Parliamentarian soldiers under Sir William Waller and Colonel Massey in 1643: their remains were discovered shortly before date of monument. Very prominent by main road. (Morris' Gloucestershire Directory, 1876.)
