Details This list entry was subject to a Minor Amendment on 30/08/2012 SU49NE 6/160 MARCHAM MILL ROAD (West side) Marcham Mill (Formerly listed under Mill Lane) GV II Mill and millhouse, now house. Early C17, with C18 extension: remodelled in 1970's. Colourwashed limestone rubble; gabled old tile roof; ridge stack, adjoining rear range, of stone finished in brick. L-plan, with mill contained in rear wing. 2 storeys; 2-window range front. Timber lintels over C20 window set in blocked entry, C19 two-light casement to left and C20 window over blocked door. Rear wing of 2 storeys; 3-window range: chamfered timber lintels over C20 door and blocked door. To right of front is C18 one-storey, one-bay building of similar materials, with brick end stack and timber lintel over C20 half-glazed door; mid C19 range to rear is roughcast with gabled Welsh slate roof and 6-pane sashes. Interior: chamfered beams. Rear wing, originally mill, has butt-purlin roof, and had first floor removed in C20. History: a mill has stood on this site since the Cll. (V.C.H.: Berkshire, Vol.IV, pp.354-5; photographs in Museum of English Rural Life, Reading).
