Heritage listing

Details The granite memorial stands in a small enclosure about 22m to the east of the Church of St Mary (Grade I-listed), in close proximity to a number of churchyard monuments listed at Grade II. It takes the form of a tall Latin cross, square on plan and with slightly splayed cross arms, rising from a three-stepped, octagonal, base. The principal dedicatory inscription, recorded on the front face of the cross and running down the cross shaft, reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN/ HONOURED/ MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF/ LUPPITT/ WHO/ LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ “GREATER LOVE/ HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS.” The memorial is raised from street level on a square platform, and enclosed by a rubble stone retaining wall in the embanked area at the roadside. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 10 November 2017.
