Heritage listing
Details The granite memorial stands in a small enclosure about 22m to the east of the Church of St Mary (Grade I-listed), in close proximity to a number of churchyard monuments listed at Grade II. It takes the form of a tall Latin cross, square on plan and with slightly splayed cross arms, rising from a three-stepped, octagonal, base. The principal dedicatory inscription, recorded on the front face of the cross and running down the cross shaft, reads TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND/ IN/ HONOURED/ MEMORY/ OF THE/ MEN OF/ LUPPITT/ WHO/ LAID DOWN/ THEIR LIVES/ IN THE/ GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ (NAMES)/ “GREATER LOVE/ HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS/ THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS.” The memorial is raised from street level on a square platform, and enclosed by a rubble stone retaining wall in the embanked area at the roadside. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 10 November 2017.
