Low-lying, 13-bay, roughly 16 yard, small aqueduct bridge comprising cast-iron trough supported on masonry base and short girder-section over burn; whinstone archway with red sandstone cope and voussoirs at each end. Central sluice mechanism marked B3G. 2007 cover and railings. — Listed as a good example of the smaller type of cast-iron aqueduct bridge that was built as part of the first phase of the Glasgow Corporation Water Works system (see below for significance of the scheme as a whole) from 1856 onwards. This bridge is one of seven small low-lying aqueducts that cross small burns at the top end of the scheme (in this case, an unnamed burn flowing into Loch Chon). In terms of construction it is a simplified version of the larger and more imposing aqueducts at Couligarten, Castle Burn and Corrie (see separate listings). At the time of building the surrounding area was uninhabited, there were no roads and the local stone was unsuitable for building. The engineer, John Bateman, described these aqueduct bridges as 'somewhat peculiar', and their design results from the lack of available building stone. The iron construction was much more expensive and technologically difficult than building an arched masonry aqueduct. The height of the iron trough was raised by about 2½ feet in the 1860s to increase capacity. The Glasgow Corporation Water Works system, which brings water down to Glasgow fro
