Details A First World War memorial with later with additions for the Second World War. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands opposite the ruins of the Church of St John the Baptist (Grade II* and a scheduled monument ) within the village. It comprises a plain Latin cross on a tapering octagonal shaft set upon a square plinth with a three-stepped octagonal base. The south face of the plinth carries the main inscription in incised lettering: TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE/ THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR KING AND/ COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR./ 1914 – 1918. The north face is inscribed: (NAMES)/ LIVE THOU FOR ENGLAND AS WE/ FOR ENGLAND DIED. An additional inscription on the west face of the plinth reads: (NAMES)/ 1939 – 1945
