Details LISS 1068/0/10042 MILL ROAD 28-NOV-05 War Memorial II War memorial. 1921. Designer unknown. Cornish granite. DESCRIPTION: Squat Cornish granite obelisk, set on a slightly tapering square pedestal with boldly moulded capping. This rests on stepped base, the upper tier of which has a moulded top. The west face of the pedestal has lead lettering which reads: 'To the undying memory of our victorious dead who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1918'. Under this are eight names of the fallen. On the north and south faces are a further 43 names. On the east face is the inscription 'Also to commemorate the fallen in the Second World War 1939-1945' with a list of 14 names below. A further 7 names are inscribed on the upper tier of the base with 11 on the tier below. HISTORY: Unveiled on 6th March 1921 by Major General GD Jeffreys having beeen built at a cost of £162.15s.6d. SUMMARY OF IMPORTANCE: War memorials have very strong historic and cultural significance on both a local and national scale. This particular example, erected in 1921, is a simple but elegant obelisk in a prominent town centre location. SOURCES: The Hants and Sussex News.
