Details First and Second World War memorial. Erected 1921 with the names of the Fallen of the Second World War added after 1945. MATERIALS: carved from granite with bronze plaques. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial is situated on a green next to Church Road near Holy Trinity church. The memorial comprises a flaming grenade set upon the capital of an octagonal rough-hewn granite column with a moulded base. The grenade is of granite and the flame is of bronze. A bronze longsword is positioned on the front (SE) face of the column which stands on an octagonal plinth and two-tier stepped base. The front face of the plinth carries a bronze plaque, which bears the inscription: THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1918/ “THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE”/ [NAMES]. A plaque on the NW face of the plinth is inscribed: TO THE/ GLORIOUS DEAD/ 1939 – 1945/ THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE/ [NAMES]. The plinth is inscribed with 29 names of the Fallen from the First World War and nine names from the Second World War. This List entry has been amended to add the source for War Memorials Online.
