Details First World War memorial. MATERIALS: granite. DESCRIPTION: the memorial is located within the churchyard of St Mary’s Church, and it comprises a wheel-head Calvary cross, the cross arms decorated with Celtic-style knotwork and bearing a carved figure of Christ. It is set upon a tapered shaft which bears the inscription on the front face in lead letters: “WHO GAVE / HIMSELF / FOR ME”/ IN PIOUS MEMORY / OF THOSE WHO / GAVE THEMSELVES / FOR THEIR / NATIVE LAND / 1914 – 1917/ (NAMES) / ON WHOSE SOUL / MAY THE LORD / HAVE MERCY AMEN. On the back of the shaft is inscribed: 1917 – 1918 / (NAMES) / 1939 – 1945 / (NAMES). The shaft is set upon a hexagonal two-stepped base.
