Details SO 8802-8902 CHALFORD LONDON ROAD (off south side) 13/77 Iles's Mill Lock and canal bridge GV II Side walls and fittings to canal lock; bridge over canal. 1785 for Thames and Severn Canal Company. Red brick; ashlar limestone dressings. Brick-built lock walls with widening entrance at east end. Large ashlar coping stones and dressings at gate positions; iron fittings to restrain gateposts. Pair of lock gates at east end in poor condition at time of survey (September 1986); other gates missing. Brick steps from tow path to higher lock-side level rebuilt during 1902-3 repairs. Bridge adjoins lock at west end over entry, with segmental (almost semi-circular) arch having ashlar imposts. Plain curved extrados string course. Plain parapet and curved retaining walls with plain stone coping, parapet at north end increased in height in stone c1814 after construction of adjacent turnpike road. Little patching or signs of rebuilding. (M.A. Handford and D.J.
