Details MIDDLESBROUGH WILSON STREET, NZ 4920 NW south side. 7/94 Showboat Social Club. G.V. II Theatre, 1906/08 by C.F. Ward (Birmingham), Converted to cinema 1913, ballroom 1956, and social club 1968. Brick, with painted buff-terracotta dressings. Welsh slate roofs. Classical style. 2 storeys and mezzanine. One-bay centre flanked by slightly-projecting one-bay staircase towers. Centre has renewed doors in wide chamfered opening under renewed fascia. Blocked semi-circular mezzanine window in heavily-moulded surround. Enriched keystone and spandrels. 3-bay quasi-Ionic Order, on first floor with blocked windows, segment-plan balustraded balconies, and segmental pediment with enriched escutcheon over middle, flanked by balustraded parapets. Towers have renewed doors in corniced architraves, and blocked 3-light windows on ground floor. Blocked semi-circular mezzanine windows with keyed archivolts and shaped aprons. Rusticated clasping pilaster strips, on 2nd stage, flanking blocked round-headed windows with blind tympana and enriched aprons, in segmental-pedimented quasi-Ionic surrounds, with enriched tympana and spandrels. Coved top cornice, and pyramidal roofs with wood lanterns. Lower one-bay left wing has oculi with keyed architraves and enriched aprons, on mezzanine and left first floor. Ground floor altered. 3-storey 5-bay right dressing-room wing; has segmental pediments over blocked paired windows flanked by pilaster strips. Altered on ground floor left. 2-bay staircase wing further right. Formerly known. as Hippodrome Theatre/Cinema, and Astoria Ballroom.
