Details 787/0/10111 NEW HESTON ROAD 19-APR-01 Heston War Memorial GV II Heston War Memorial. 1918 by Arthur G. Walker, sculptor. Portland stone. Statue of a private soldier in full marching kit, standing at ease. Square pedestal over a three stage stepped base, with lists of names of the fallen and reliefs of naval activity on each side. Matching posts and chains surround the memorial. Front inscription opens: IN HONOUR OF THE MEN OF THIS VILLAGE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918. A later inscription was added to the base, reading REMEMBER ALSO THE MEN ANDE WOMEN OF HESTON WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE SECOND WORLD WAR 1939-1945. The memorial was the gift of Sir Frederick and Lady Becker, and was unveiled on June 1st 1918, several months before the Armistice. The memorial originally stood on a shallow earthen mound; the present stepped base was formed after 1945. See Middlesex Chronicle, 9th November 1962.
