Heritage listing
Category B Date Added 30/03/1998 Local Authority South Lanarkshire Planning Authority South Lanarkshire Parish Bothwell NGR NS 68496 61566 Coordinates 268496, 661566 — 1840 with later repairs to parapet. 4 segmental red sandstone ashlar arches (some re-pointing to piers) with ashlar voussoirs, soffits and abutments; string course below plain ashlar coped parapet; band course to shallow, chamfered triangular-plan cutwaters; raised vertical rectangular panels above cutwaters, dividing arches, continued to parapet. Low curved and coped red sandstone ashlar approach walls. No pedestrian walkways. — Haughhead Bridge takes Blantyre Farm Road over the river Clyde and connects Uddingston with Blantyre Parish. Originally called the Red Brig due to the rich red sandstone from which it was constructed, it provided a better crossing than the hazardous ford previously at this site. Nearby, on the east bank, lies a small tollhouse, contemporary with the bridge (see separate list description).
