Details ST33NE 9/23 CHILTON POLDEN CP BROADWAY (North side) Grotto and bridge adjacent to east of No 71 (The Tower House) GV II Grotto. Early C19 by William Stradling. Rubble and tufa. Pair of small connected vaulted chambers, the floors set slightly below ground level; earth banked up around the chambers with retaining walls, forming an irregular oblong mound. Roof of one chamber rises to a cylindrical rubble ventilator with narrow openings in stone surrounds; 3 entrances with steps down. East chamber with romantic text on a marble slab. To east end of mound a mock pagan altar formed of 4 large stone slabs. Entrance to north across a causeway between 2 ponds, small rubble bridge with rough-hewn abutments.
