Category B Date Added 15/12/1970 Local Authority Glasgow Planning Authority Glasgow Burgh Glasgow NGR NS 57419 67020 Coordinates 257419, 667020 — A N Paterson, architect; 1924. Polished ashlar war memorial set in school wall at junction of Colebrooke Street and Great Western Road. Stugged ashlar school wall adjoins school railings at NE, and approach wall to Great Western Bridge at SE. Memorial plaque flanked by ashlar piers with wreathed dates commemorating schools foundation (1845) and its reconstitution (1923). Central inscribed dedication panel flanked by sculpted palm branches superimposed on fluted pilasters supporting incised frieze, mutule cornice and blocking course. 2 shallow steps up to memorial High school wall with intermediate ashlar piers with incised band Greek key detail. — The Builder describes the unveiling of the Academy War Memorial on the 11 November 1924, attributing the work to Paterson. The obituary on Millar, written by his former partner A McInnes Gardner in 1922 claims a memorial design for the Academy as his own. It seems probable that Millar designed a memorial but it was not the one chosen; if Paterson had merely been executing Millar's design there would surely have been reference to his name or follow-up to The Builder's attribution.
