Details First World War memorial, erected in 1922. MATERIALS: carved from Portland stone. DESCRIPTION: the war memorial stands in the churchyard of the church of St Peter (Grade II*). It comprises a Celtic cross and a tapering shaft with runic carvings including a dove, tree and a whale, representing air, land and sea respectively. It stands on a tall rectangular plinth which has a chamfered collar inscribed with: TO THE/ GLORY/ OF GOD. Below this is an inscription in black painted lettering which reads: A THANK OFFERING/ FOR PEACE/ AND IN/ HONOURED MEMORY/ OF/ THOSE FROM THIS PARISH/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918 / (Names)/ RIP. The right return is inscribed: 1939-1945 / (Names). SUBSIDIARY FEATURE: the memorial is stands within a small remembrance garden that is enclosed by low stone rubble walls and which is not included in the listing. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register. These sources were not used in the compilation of this List entry but are added here as a guide for further reading, 11 January 2017.
