Details FORD FORD CASTLE NT 9437 17/88 Flagpole Tower and forecourt wall attached to north GV I Tower, formerly the south-west corner tower of the quadrilateral castle but now detached. Linked to the present house (q.v. Ford Castle) by a stretch of forecourt wall c.30 yards long. C14 (licence to crenellate 1338). The lower parts of the forecourt wall are curtain walling from the castle, the parapet is of 1791 by Nisbet. Tower restored and top floor renewed 1862. Squared stone; Welsh slate roof. Square tower 5 storeys plus basement. East side has two C18 doors with 4-centred arches and hoodmoulds. Blocked lancet on 1st floor. Chamfered offset above 1st floor. On 2nd floor a blocked C18 window and a C19 2-light mullioned window. North side has C19 stone steps to possibly original lst- floor doorway with pointed arch and continuous chamfer. Platform at top of steps supported on 2 large triple-set corbels. Elsewhere C19 2-light windows. Stone water spouts. Interior: basement has pointed tunnel vault with 5 square-section transverse ribs.
