Heritage listing

Details A village war memorial, unveiled in August 1921. MATERIALS & PLAN: Cornish granite with inset lead lettering. The cross stands in the village churchyard, to the west of the Church of St Keria (Grade II). It is a cross with shaft and stepped base rising from a platform which has obelisk-shaped piers to the corners. The cross head takes the form of a Celtic wheel head. It has round, cushion-shaped bosses to the arms and at the centre and the arms are flared at their ends. The shaft is tapered and rises from a base of three steep steps, below which is a platform. Four obelisk-shaped pillars stand at the corners of a paved enclosure surrounding the monument and are linked by chains. Inscribed on the top step of the base is the following wording: ‘TO THE GLORY OF GOD / AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF / THE MEN OF EGLOSKERRY / WHO FELL IN THE / GREAT WAR 1914 - 1918’. On the step below are the names of the fallen. The bottom step is inscribed ‘THEY LIVE FOR EVERMORE / 1939 – 1945’. Below this are the names of the Fallen. A paved path leads from the monument to the churchyard entrance. This List entry has been amended to add sources for War Memorials Online and the War Memorials Register.
