Details SOUTH CERNEY BOW-WOW SU 0497-0597 (north side) 14/213 Chapter Manor 12.8.81 GV II Large detached house, formerly known as South Cerney House. Partly early/mid C18, enlarged to east c1914. Coursed and dressed rubble stone, hipped stone slate roof with projecting eaves, large central brick ridge stack to west, stone stacks with moulded cornice to remainder. Square range built round square light well, 2 storeys and attic. Oldest part to west has 8 bays, 3 blind and rest with 12-pane sashes with nearly flush sash boxes and continuous plat band above and keystone to each bay. Ground floor has 7 bays, with 5 similar windows. Half-glazed door just left of centre with flanking stone pilasters and wide gabled porch hood supported on scroll brackets. Four gabled dormers with paired casements. Remainder of house has C20 multi-pane casements or wood mullion and transoms. On north side, large projecting square porch with cornice and parapet, double 4-panel doors with wide flat stone hood on console brackets. Interior much modernised but one ground floor room to west has very fine C18 decorative plasterwork, niches, etc. Reputed to have been a settlement on this site since early medieval period, connected with Augustinian Order at Bristol.
