Category B Date Added 03/08/1971 Local Authority Dumfries And Galloway Planning Authority Dumfries And Galloway Parish Canonbie NGR NY 39528 76550 Coordinates 339528, 576550 — Gideon Boyd of Greystail and Andrew Mein of Westerkirk contracting masons: contract dated 16.3.1752. Roadbridge, 3 segmental arches over River Esk with roadway sloping down from E to W bank. Rubble-built with red ashlar voussoirs and pointed cutwaters either side (abutment repairs at NE in bull-nosed red ashlar): roadway widened 1899 on cantilevers and with decorative cast-iron brackets: circa 1950 lattice-patterned metal parapets (part of 1899 railings survive at SW). — Ruins of medieval Canonbie Priory said to have been quarried to help build this bridge. Some 1899 iron parapet railings re-used at Williamwood, Annan (information from owner).
