Heritage listing

Details War Memorial, First and Second World Wars; constructed of polished grey granite. The memorial consists of a trefoil cross above a tapering octagonal shaft set on an octagonal plinth, which in turn surmounts a two stepped octagonal base. On six sides of the plinth are the names of the young men who sacrificed their lives in the First World War, with additional information that includes the age of some, and their various regiments. Also included in most cases is the date and place of death, and whether they were killed in action or died of wounds. On one face of the plinth is an inscription that reads ‘To the Glory of God and in gratitude to our sons and brothers who laid down their lives for king and country in the Great war 1914-1918’. The memorial also records the three names of those who died in the Second World War, and the eighth side of the plinth carries the inscription ‘Also for those who gave their lives in the war (dates illegible)’. The memorial is sited amongst the gravestones and memorials of the churchyard of the church of St Mary the Virgin (Grade I).
