Details This list entry was subject to a Minor Amendment on 19/02/2015 SD27SW 708-1/4/2 BARROW IN FURNESS, ABBEY APPROACH (East side (off)), Bridge over Mill Beck and attached gateway at Abbey Vale (Formerly listed as Bridge over Mill Beck and attached gateway at Abbey Dale) GV II Bridge and attached gateway. c1873 gateway; the bridge probably earlier C19. Red sandstone rubble; wrought-iron gates. The bridge has a single-span round arch of dressed voussoirs; parapet walls splay and terminate in simple end piers except at link with the embankment wall to Abbey Vale (qv); chamfered ashlar copings. Gateway: double gates set across the bridge carriageway have spiked dog bars with cross bracing and curved top rails with barbed finials. Iron posts with matching finials; radial side panels overhang bridge parapet. Included for group value.
