Splayed approaches. — Bridge spans present line of River Lochy, re-cut and re-aligned in early 19th century, a remarkable project undertaken in order that the original bed could accommodate the Caledonian Canal between lighthouse and westermost lock, thus maintaining a straight course. (This section of canal still marks the parish boundary with Kilmallie, formerly defined by the river). Banks of river flanking bridge are retained by rubble abutments.
