Category B Date Added 25/06/1980 Local Authority West Lothian Planning Authority West Lothian Parish Linlithgow NGR NS 97414 75827 Coordinates 297414, 675827 — Hugh Baird engineer, circa 1820. Segmental-arched bridge, tall parapet. Coursed bull-faced whinstone, stugged dressings, ashlar string course and coped parapet. Inscribed '48' on keystone. — The Edinburgh and Glasgow Union Canal, begun in 1818 and opened in May 1822, completed the inland waterway link between Scotland's two major cities by connecting Edinburgh to the Forth and Clyde Canal near Falkirk. Designed by Hugh Baird with advice from Telford on the three main aqueducts. The canal when completed was 31 and a half miles long, 5ft deep, 37ft wide at the surface and 20ft wide at the bottom. The Union Canal is a Scheduled Ancient Monument, SAM No. 4170, Scheduled on 15 December 2003.
