Details BERGH APTON 1880/0/10010 War Memorial in churchyard of Church o 16-DEC-08 f St Peter and St Paul GV II MATERIALS: Stone DESCRIPTION: Octagonal base surmounted by pedestal with plinth, tapered shaft and gabled cross. Inscriptions on the sides of the plinth and on the base. The north side reads 'IN MEMORY/ OF THE MEN OF/ BERGH APTON/ WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR/ 1914-1918/ MAY THEY REST IN PEACE'. On the base of the north face it reads 'AND OF THOSE WHO FELL/1939-1945'.On the south side it reads 'THEY GAVE THEIR/ LIVES TO SERVE GOD/ THEIR KING AND/ THEIR COUNTRY/ IN DEFENCE OF/ TRUTH LIBERTY/ AND JUSTICE'. The names of those remembered are on the east and west faces. HISTORY: Unveiled on 28th May 1920. REASONS FOR DESIGNATION DECISION: This war memorial is listed at Grade II, for the following principal reasons: * It is an important reminder of the local impact of nationally and internationally significant events * It is a good example of a relatively simple but architecturally distinct tribute to the fallen of two world wars * It has group value with the adjoining church and churchyard monuments.
