Details SE33NE SE3937 17/32 BARWICK IN ELMET AND SCHOLES THE CROSS LS15 (south side) Medieval crossbase and War Memorial GV II Base of cross surmounted by War Memorial. Medieval with 1919 memorial. Dressed freestone base, limestone memorial. Cross-base: square on plan with 4 diminishing steps. War memorial: a tall cross with plinth, tapering shaft and wheel-head cross carved with Celtic style interlace carving. Set in the south face of the shaft and plinth are 3 bronze plaques, the middle one recording the restoration of the cross in 1919 as a war memorial. Plaque above has names of the fallen and plaque below the names of the fallen of the 1939-45 War. Prominently sited in the middle of the village at the head of the main street and next to the village maypole.
