Iron Age hill forts of Britain
Maiden Castle, Old Oswestry, Tre'r Ceiri — the great earthwork fortifications.
Britain has around 4,000 Iron Age hill forts: ramparts and ditches enclosing 1–50 acres of hilltop. The largest, Maiden Castle, is essentially an Iron Age city. The most spectacular high-altitude examples are in north Wales (Tre'r Ceiri) and the Scottish borders. All are walking destinations rather than visitor attractions, but the views and the engineering still impress.
